Like most of us, I first became aware of Linda Greenlaw through Sebastian Junger's book The Perfect Storm, and when she began writing her own books, I purchased all of them, including the cookbooks (great recipes, btw). This has to be the most personal of all her writings to date, heartbreakingly honest and very intense. There were points where I had to take a break in order regain my own calm when she wrote about what Ken had done to Mariah. That 'Mariah' (yes, any of us who've watched Swords: Life on the Line, and even the episode of Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods, know Mariah's real name, but I honor Linda's decision to give her a pseudonym) has managed to grow beyond what happened to her is a credit not only to her own inner strength but also to Linda for taking on the challenge of raising her. 'Accidental' mother, indeed. Fine job, I say, to become what that girl needed...and for a young girl to be exactly what Linda needed at that point of her life.Until I read the book, I didn't know the personal family loss Linda had experienced, and I offer my deepest sympathies to her now.Linda, thank you for sharing this with us.
