I had no idea Hemingway had such humor. While a bit cruel to make such a mockery of another author's work, I kind of feel Anderson deserves it a bit. Of course, I read through Dark Laughter first, of which this book pokes fun. The repetitive sentences, the lack of forward movement in time, the derisive racism.... It's all here. I love how Hemingway swaps the "negro" characters out for Native Americans, barring the congenial bartender. Hemingway manages to show the bigotry of the time while maintaining diversity and personal traits in equal measure, wondering Anderson seems unable to do. Anderson isbpossibly even unaware of his own prejudice, while Hemingway keenly observes many sides to it.
